Sydney’s Sook was an up-and-comer. No more. The Magnetic Anomaly EP establishes him as one to reckon with in the neuro-tinged vaults of dark, moody bass music. The EP picks up where his highly regarded remix of ‘The Trancening’ (available on PL013 – Divergent Paths Vol.1 EP) left off last year: sci-fi atmospheres and bleak visions of the future reign supreme in this latest chapter to the Paradise Lost story. These five tracks are built upon various rhythmic configurations, but all of them will delight fans of the darker end of the spectrum.

Title track ‘Magnetic Anomaly’ features Actuator and utilizes epic arpeggios and a 4-by-4 beat foundation to take us on a fast-paced journey in the original Sook spinner hovercar. ‘Never Knows Best’ is a broken beat workout with blasting techno stabs and gets the remix lick by P.L. favorite Boot, who turns it into an introspective garage-influenced stepper. ‘The Wren’ again features Actuator in a deadly half-step plodder with a razor-sharp bassline and a nightmarish but highly catchy lead melody, and ‘Seek and Dream’ boldly shows off Sook’s expert bassline manipulation skills to produce a bleak but beautiful teched-out monster.

Each of these tracks combines delicate percussion and atmospheric textures with heavy mid-bass and true storytelling songwriting – here’s to Australia’s finest! Expect more from Down Under later in the year, but for now, digest this if you dare…

Paradise Lost Recordings is delighted to present the “Ghosts and Ghouls EP” from Estonian sensation Bisweed. Being championed by Mala among others across the globe, these tunes are heads-down cerebrum-infecting business firmly locked in the dungeons of deep, dark, minimalistic Dubstep.

“Ghosts” starts us off, and does so with abandon. Bisweed utilizes only the bare necessities to make a truly powerful, haunting tune with massive floor impact. ”Ghouls” follows up with eerie pads and more signature walking subbassline madness, exploring the dark corners of the musical underworld. ”Deadly R&B” gives us a bit more of an old skool junglist/808 workout while ”Destruction” showcases Bisweed‘s skills with unusual percussion sounds and sampled/looped grooves. Watch the second drop on this minimal future grime banger which serves up yet another heavy helping of dark bass bliss.

This kind of music wouldn’t sound out-of-place in a mad scientist’s laboratory, but we feel it is best used to devastate the dancefloors of this Earth. Crisp production, post-junglist percussion and nausea-inducing low-end define the sound that is Bisweed, and this is only Chapter 1 of the Ghost story…

Bristol’s Actraiser has been flying under the radar this year, which is hard to believe considering the magnitude of tunes he’s been coming up with in 2011. With the Survival Horror EP, Actraiser breaks out and finishes the year with probably his most mature, well-rounded work to date.

The title track Survival Horror is a breathtaking trip to the more sensual side of 140BPM, incorporating sax riffs and beautiful atmospheric pads with a smidgeon of darkness. Kusagari follows suit with a future garage workout building on the atmospheric thickness of the lead tune but especially showcasing Actraiser‘s talent for finding just the right acoustic samples for every track. Beautiful and soulful are the best ways to describe this sound. It’s A Trap flips the script altogether and brings in the booming, tribal 4×4 bass that Actraiser has been favoring as of late, providing a tune that’s certain to heat up the dancefloor while keeping things firmly footed on the darkside. A favorite dub of a host of DJs around the world this year, this one’s a surefire hit. We round things off with Hydorah, a dark and dirty future-garage-meets-broken-beat number with a filtered 2-step beat and heavy bass oozing out of your speakers like heavy molasses.

Paradise Lost is proud to present to you the Survival Horror EP by Actraiser, whose bold and confident sound is sure to capture the attention of the bass music community.

The second volume in our series of epic dancefloor releases, Divergent Paths Vol.2 sees TKR, Vandera & Lostlojic, and man-of-the-moment Chewie taking the reigns. TKR starts us off with ‘Cluster Bomb’ and brings the deepness. His combination of strings, neuro pads and tech stabs is a treat for the senses (plus home listening) and a great tool for DJs looking to keep things on the darkside but liven up the crowd at the same time. Chewie steps up on his initial Paradise Lost release with ‘Cuttin’, constructing a science fiction swing beat with ominous pads and a heavy build up in tension, which is cut like a knife by his razor sharp basswork. This is the first in a line of highly anticipated Chewie tracks on Paradise Lost which will see him make a permanent mark on Dubstep in 2011 and beyond. Vandera and Lostlojic finish things up on this dense release by bringing the fire with their Amen-heavy nugget ‘Volt’. This track is of epic proportions and you should be on the lookout for big things from these guys in the coming year. Paradise Lost, reppin’ worldwide and from strength to strength, yet again…

Vandera is a Master in testing new psychoactive drugs during the day (as a scientist) while at night, the Dutch DJ/producer composes bass music with surprisingly similar psychostimulant properties.

His melodic sounds are easily administered intra-aurally, with certain pressure waves specifically engineered for big rig sound systems. Also on the market are more blissful hallucinogenic sounds designed for afterparties or autonomic use. Both varieties from London’s psychonaut Vandera are exemplified here, and signed to beat suppliers such as Echodub (UK), Bassism (USA), Subdepth (UK), Stoke Audio (GER), Car Crash Set (USA), and Paradise Lost (USA/GER).

Extra DJ sets with long kinetic half-lives can be found on mixcloud. For bookings, remix inquiries and label signings send a message through soundcloud, or find the mad scientist on AIM: vanderamusic.

Repeated administration has been shown to result in uncontrolled nodding of the head and persistent yet pleasant psychological dependence.

TKR graces us with two slabs of electronic perfection on his inaugural Paradise Lost artist EP. The title track ‘Future Unknown’ is a forward-thinking example of TKR’s production talents at 170bpm – blending melodies with his precision drums and ominous, yet uplifting pads. We’ve enlisted Australia’s most deadly Hospital/Med School ninja – Royalston – for a remix which is both delicate and ferocious. He gradually turns up the “Epic” dial throughout this experiment in future funk and his sinister reeces and crisp production bring this track to a level we didn’t think possible. This remix is already a hit, enjoys support by a number of the DNB elite, and is featured on a Hospital Records CD mixed by Royalston himself.

The flipside sees TKR in more familiar territory around 140bpm. ‘Breath’ is a journey through space – a wall-of-sub bassline compliments space-age drum programming and warped snares, creating a 4-dimensional sound experiment with an Arabic tinge that will be a favorite of those leaning towards the more deep and abstract end of the Dubstep continuum. Twisted, who has a Paradise Lost artist EP of his own coming up, takes ‘Breath’ in a more rolling direction with the bassline, adds in some bouncey, funky signature drums, but keeps the feel deep and complex in his aptly titled Flying Carpet Remix. Whether it’s DNB, Halfstep or Dubstep you’re after, there’s a version on this release for you. So pick your poison and Paradise Lost shall deliver!
